Witbank Road upgrades

Mpumalanga Province will be receiving a major road upgrade to the route between eMalahleni and Ogies. There is a major coal haulage route servicing Kendal Power Station among others and due to the poor condition of the road rehabilitation and upgrade was necessary. img

The government appointed Sekhukhune and Associates as the consulting engineers to design and provide construction management. The road is a 27km long, single carriageway with the addition of some passing lanes. The road pavement structure consists of modified gravels and crushed stone. Intersections are surfaced with asphalt with the balance of the road adorned with chip and spray seal.

Commissioned by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government the R 239 million (US $35.9million) will be a tremendous benefit to the region in terms of safety and economic growth in the region.

Works on this road consisted of:
  1. Construction of earthworks and layer works
  2. Construction of road seal
  3. Relocation of services
  4. Repair of existing culverts and bridge structures
  5. Construction of temporary roads and culverts
  6. Finishing of the road and road reserve
  7. Maintenance of the works
  8. Fencing off borrow pits during construction
  9. Provision of temporary drainage structures during construction
  10. Rehabilitation of borrow pits after use including obtaining of closure permits

This route is very pivotal, not only for linking the mining areas to the national highways, but it is also used as a detour when the N12 is impassable due to mist or accidents. The Witbank Road development will be completed by 26 February 2011.
