Other key projects such as the new multi-storey parkade located near the current International terminal, the massive road network upgrade, the fully operational air bridges and aircraft stands are expected to be complete by in March. Project Cost Completion
Elevated Roadway
The growth of the airport has necessitated the separation of arriving and departing vehicular traffic. For this reason, an upper roadway, similar to O.R.Tambo international Airport (ORTIA), has been constructed. This roadway will see all drop off’s on the upper roadway, with all collections for shuttles and metered taxis at the ground level by the Transport Plaza and all pick-ups for the general public located along the central boulevard.
Project set to be complete in March 2010
Multi-Storey Parkade(MSP)
Located near the current International Terminal, this 5-storey parkade will increase the airport’s parking by 4,000 bays upon its completion. The 1stand 2nd floors were made available in December 2009 with the 3rd and 4th floors coming in January 2010 and the R394 million(US$52 million) parkade is on track to be completed in March 2010. The MSP is the largest single purpose parkade in the Western Cape with the total floor area equivalent to 16 soccer fields and the length of columns equal to 8 times the height of Table Mountain.
Road Network Upgrade
This massive R120 million (US$16 million)road upgrade comprises the reconfiguration of the airport approach road, the current central boulevard, the widening of the exit road and freight road near the Oval. The new road system will separate passenger vehicular movement from internal service vehicular movement, ensuring an efficient and free flow of traffic at the airport. The project will also include the construction of the Transport Plaza and associated pedestrian subways, underpasses and new (parking) ticket plazas. This project will be completed in March 2010.
Passenger Loading Bridges
Currently, the airport has two R25 million (US$3 million)air bridges used for international flights only. A further 8 passenger loading bridges have been built of which 5 will be used for domestic passengers. The new boarding air bridges will prevent passengers from being exposed to extreme conditions such as wind, rain and heat.
Additional aircraft parking stands
Parking is not only being increased on the landside, but also on the R60 million (US$ 8 million)airside too with parking stands for planes. These were operational in December 2009.
Consolidated Car Rental Facility
As of March 2010, a R 30 million (US$4 million) consolidated Central Car Rental facility will be situated opposite the Transport Plaza. This will be accessed from the ground floor of the terminal building via the pedestrian subways. The pedestrian subways go under the Central Boulevard road to the car rental facility and the shaded parking.
Additional retail shops: Airport Shopping Safari
From 44 to 74 shops at the airport’s New Central Terminal Building, the retail will cater for your every need and shopping desire. The retail alone will take up 5,700 to 9,500 m² of the terminal floor. Trading hours at all retails will accommodate all flights.
Both Mugg & Bean coffee shops are going to be open 24 hours with the one located on the airside domestic departure lounge boasting the first of a kind “grab and go” (self service) concept.
Woolworth’s food and clothing will also have a grab and go coffee shop.
Spur, tipped to be the biggest Spur in Africa will occupy 1080m² of the floor airside facing 500 seats. This will also offer the only smoking area at the airport for landside travellers, meeters and greeters.
